Hello Folks, we&rsquo;re just two more tutorials away from the completion of our Git course. In this tutorial, we&rsquo;re going to learn about ignoring files in Git.&nbsp;

Well, what does ignoring files in Git mean? As we all know, when we execute the &ldquo;git add .&rdquo; command, then all the files of the directory come in the staging area, and then we commit them.
&nbsp;
But when we are in some project, there are certain files that either we intentionally don&rsquo;t want to track or are of no use. So, to ignore such files, there is a way in Git.

<h3>What if we track all the files using Git?</h3>
Of course, you can track all the files, but it will only increase your data load, and the time taken to push or pull will also increase. So, overall we can say it&rsquo;s a wastage of time and data.

<h3>How to ignore files in Git?</h3>
We can create a file named &ldquo;.gitignore&rdquo; and this file contains the list of all the files or folders that we don&rsquo;t want our Git to track. But there are several rules to specify the names. We&rsquo;ll cover them all.

Step 1: Open your local repository and start Git bash over there.
Step 2: Now execute the following command,

Step 3: Now you have to open the .gitignore file in Notepad, and for that execute this command,

Your notepad window will open.

Step 4: You&rsquo;ve to specify files and folders that you do not want to track.
&nbsp;
You can enter the data in the following ways,

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">index.txt - You can enter the file name with extension.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">*.py - You can put an asterisk symbol and then extension. Now the Git will not track any file with the .py extension.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">folderName/ - It will ignore the files and folders in this particular directory.</li>
</ul>

Step 5: After entering the files or folders in the .gitignore file, save it. Now the Git will not track all those files included in the .gitignore.&nbsp;
